The Outing 2015, Lisdoonvarna, County Clare - Bigger & Better

"The world's first gay and lesbian matchmaking and music weekend, The Outing, was held on the first weekend of October this year in the small village of Lisdoonvarna in County Clare. This year's festival was extra special as on May 22, the Republic of Ireland made history as the first country in the world to recognize marriage equality by popular vote. The electorate voted YES to include a new clause about marriage in the Constitution: 'Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex'. The Outing’s 2015 edition (2 – 4 October) as a result promised to be even bigger and better than before and it did not disappoint. Open to everyone, straight, the LGBT community, and their friends and families, the fantastic line up of Irish and international stars left everyone smiling." Marlon James - Man Booker Prize Winner 2015

Jamaican author Marlon James has won the 2015 Man Booker Prize for his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings. The novel is based on the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in 1976 and James says that a huge part of the novel was inspired by reggae music. 686 pages long with over 75 characters from CIA agents to drug dealers, the novel features gang violence, drugs and graphic sex but also lots of laughs.

In a New York Times review, Michiko Kakutani said of the novel
“It’s like a Tarantino remake of “The Harder They Come” but with a soundtrack by Bob Marley and a script by Oliver Stone and William Faulkner, with maybe a little creative boost from some primo ganja.”

In addition to his £50,000 prize and trophy, James also received a designer bound edition of his book and a further £2,500 for being shortlisted. He can also expect a dramatic increase in sales of the book.

Author Debbie Thomas inspires young readers in Kilmihil, Kildysart, Corofin and Newmarket, County Clare

Debbie Thomas, author of the trilogy Dead Hairy, Jungle Tangle and Monkie Business and the newly published Class Act was back in Clare’s libraries this week to inspire young readers in Kilmihil, Kildysart, Corofin and Newmarket. Debbie was a delight to listen to and involved her audiences right throughout her presentations using practical exercises to show them how stories are created. She shared stories of past experiences and employments including working as a radio news presenter with the BBC to illustrate her path to becoming a writer of children’s books.

Included in feedback on the event from Kildysart Library, Branch Librarian Margaret Sheehan commented, “The pupils really enjoyed the event and promised to take on board Debbie’s advice of writing ideas down to turn into stories. All of Debbie’s books that I had in the library were borrowed by the classes attending on the day.”

Autumn Reading for Children with Clare County Library

Now that summer is over it’s time for children to get themselves stuck in a good book and Clare County Library is here to help. Six of our branch libraries run book clubs for children and their members have provided reviews of books they have read . There is also an on-line list of Book Promotions which gathers together children’s books on various themes and links to fun and educational kids’ websites. All books reviewed are available through Clare libraries. Membership of the children's library is free and members may borrow a total of four books from any library branch in the county. Also, of course, Children’s Book Festival has just started with plenty of book-based activities and events throughout the county.
