Halloween event in Tulla Library
Tulla Library was packed to capacity on a recent October evening for Halloween crafts and stories with local “witch” Edel McInerney. Edel’s special spooky event was much appreciated by Branch Librarian, Anne McNamara and forty children who attended with their parents. Fitting so many people in Tulla Branch Library at one time was surely in itself an example of Halloween magic at work!!

Major Publishers Collaborate on Morpurgo Month
Schools, libraries and bookshops are invited to focus weekly on the themes of Animals, War, Legends and Voyages, all common to Morpurgo’s writing and one of his books will be highlighted each day of the month via social media.
The website www.michaelmorpurgo.com will host author videos, author downloads and other free resources.
New eBooks
Man Booker prize winning novel The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton is now available to members of Clare County Library to download in eBook format. The book set during the 19th century New Zealand gold rush is at 832 pages, the longest work to win in the prize’s 45 year history.
Also available for loan as an eBook in addition to the printed version is Cathy Kelly’s latest novel The Honey Queen.
Skulduggery Pleasant fans can read the latest book in the series, Last Stand of Dead Men, on their eReader. Demon Dentist the new book by David Walliams – who has been hailed as the new Roald Dahl - is another novel available for younger readers to download.

Children’s Book Festival at Scariff Public Library
Puppeteers, artists and storytellers all paid a visit to Scariff Public Library this October to celebrate Children’s Book Festival in style. Niall de Burca got it off to a flying start with his rib-tickling stories after the Summer Reading Challenge certificate presentation. They made their own sock puppet with the Dog and String Theatre and got to put on a puppet show of their own. Alan Nolan impressed with his drawing skills and children had such fun designing their own comic strips and sketching one of the characters from his comics. Ger Siggins sure made an impression with his book Rugby Spirit, children are still coming in every day asking for copies. Wayne O’Connor’s passion for drawing and fantastically entertaining storytelling wowed the audience and he treated them to signed copies of his cartoons before he left! Looking forward to Children’s Book Festival 2014 already!
Scariff and Killaloe Libraries host Interactive Science Show for Children
Primary School Children from Scariff and Killaloe will celebrate Science Week in their local libraries on the 11th of November 2013. In a fast-moving show exploring the forces that are so important in allowing us to move, children will discover how propellers and rocket engines can push us forward and how friction and air resistance can hold us back. The hour long show takes place in Scariff at 10am and in Killaloe Library at 1.15pm
Children attending will be invited to travel to a world with little friction on an amazing hovercraft and they will witness the explosive power of rockets! And that’s not all; they will also enjoy finding out how to inflate marshmallows using the pressure of air!
This exciting science week show is brought to you courtesy of Learn Differently Ltd., Antrim and is facilitated by Terence Finnegan as part of Science Week Ireland which will see hundreds of events taking place nationwide from the 10th to the 17th of November 2013.
Speaking at the launch of Science Week 2013 well known science and maths educator Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin said, “I am delighted to be involved with Science Week and encourage everyone to get involved to see how science influences their lives! With over 550 events taking place nationwide there is something for everybody to take part in. Science can be found in everything we do and Science Week provides people with the opportunity to explore what’s happening behind the scenes of everyday life, which we sometimes don’t think about!” Clare County Library’s science week event is free to children in primary schools in the Scariff and Killaloe area.
