The Loop Head Peninsula

Polish Irish Association celebrates St. Nicholas Day at Ennis Library
On Friday evening the 6th December staff at deValera Public Library, Ennis, held a craft workshop for members of the Polish Irish Community to celebrate St. Nicholas Day which traditionally starts off the Christmas holiday in Poland. In the Polish tradition St. Nicholas, called Sw. Mikolaj in Poland, is a saintly, dignified figure who comes as a bishop, carrying a crozier. Descending from Heaven with an angel helper, he travels on foot or in a sleigh pulled by a white horse as he visits homes in the countryside. Fifteen children and their parents along with teenage siblings and helpers decorated a tree in creative hand-crafted decorations during a fun workshop. The tree is now on display in the window of deValera Library. Polish Christmas music and treats for the busy children added to the evening’s enjoyment. Clare County Library is pleased to welcome our Polish friends to its main branch and plans to continue to maintain links with the group in the coming year.

Nobel Prize-winning novelist Doris Lessing dies at 94
The celebrated author Doris Lessing died on Nov 17th. She was born in Persia (now Iran) in 1919 but spent most of her childhood in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Most of Lessing’s fiction is autobiographical, much of it emerging out of her experiences in Africa. Her work focuses on a wide range of issues from the politics of race and gender to the role of the family and the individual in society. Lessing’s best known and most influential work is The Golden Notebook which made her a reluctant feminist icon on its publication in 1962. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2007.
Tulla, Co. Clare, features in new TG4 series on Sunday 19th at 9.30p.m.
Hosted by broadcaster Evelyn O’Rourke, Tar Abhaile (Come Home) is a new and inspirational six part bilingual series on TG4 that follows local Irish communities as they welcome people from across the globe in search of their Irish ancestors. The premise is simple: reverse genealogy. Instead of waiting for people of Irish origin to trace their roots, groups of community volunteers work together under the auspices of Ireland Reaching Out to trace those individuals and families who left their local area throughout the 1800’s and 1900’s.
Episode 2 features two descendents who are tracked down and brought home by Tulla Reaching Out. Brenda Cavillin from Ontario is overcome with emotion as she discovers the story of her great, great great granduncle who served as a curate in Tulla for a year, dying from cholera as a result of tending to the sick in the community and Blake Dickie, a Chicago native who was adopted as a baby, shook the hands of dozens of blood relatives first the very first time in his life.

There will be a variety of crafts on display, from knitted items, artwork and jewellery to homemade cakes, sweets and buns. All items for sale are handmade by local craftspeople. Admission is free.

2014 IMPAC Award
The Irish titles are: The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan, The Testament of Mary by Colm Tóibín and The Light of Amsterdam by David Park. The 152 books eligible for the 2014 award were nominated by libraries in 110 cities and 39 countries worldwide. 41 are titles in translation, spanning 17 languages, and 47 are first novels. The Award is managed by Dublin City Council’s library service.
The most nominated books this year are Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel and Canada by Richard Ford, both of which received nine nominations from libraries in Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, Britain and America. Other books nominated by multiple libraries are The Dinner by Herman Koch, The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson, The Round House by Louise Erdrich and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce.
The shortlist will be announced on 9th April 2014 with the winner announced on 12th June 2014.

'The ‘Move it’ science roadshow, which took place in Scariff Public Library on 11th November, was just the antidote to a grey and cold Monday morning for pupils of Scariff national school; fun, interesting and even educational. Celebrating Science Week, the fast-moving show exploring forces saw pupils try out home made hovercraft, cover their ears from mighty explosions and inflate marshmallows using the pressure of air.
The presentation had lots of exciting, interactive experiments and interesting scientific facts making for a very accessible session for all. Pupils attention never flagged and it was commented that it was the best presentation ever seen in the library. By far the most popular experiment of the session was when a teacher was asked to sit on a stool of nails!

A Pyrography Exhibition by Stephen Smith-Danaher at Seán Lemass Public Library, Shannon
Stephen Smith-Danaher, a Shannon native and an art enthusiast, learned pyrography in his woodwork class.
Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker.
Stephen has created several portraits of friends and well-known people and for commissions. His exhibition in Shannon library which runs from the 5th to the 15th of November is a unique collection of portraits of musical, sporting and film icons of the modern era.
From Foynes to Shannon
On Tuesday 22nd October at 7p.m. in Seán Lemass Public Library, Shannon Valerie Sweeney presented Clare County Library Service with the boxed set of an eight-hour documentary series “From Foynes to Shannon”, originally aired on Clare FM in 2001 and 2002. Valerie also presented the original photographs used in her sold-out book, “Shannon Airport – A Unique Story of Survival” to the Library. Many of these photographs have never been seen before. The collection includes pictures of stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra at Shannon Airport. Valerie also presented Dúchas na Sionna with 37 original recorded tapes, all her research and photos of the early crashes at Shannon as well as a variety of photographs for the group’s “Social History of Shannon” project.
Over 100 guests were in attendance as Valerie spoke of her memories of the early days of Shannon airport. Former managers of Aer Rianta and Aer Rianta International, Michael Guerin and Liam Skelly were present at the event as was guest of honour Danny Ryall, aged 96 years of age, who posed for photographs beside a picture of himself as a very young man servicing an Air Corps Anson aircraft.
The evening was a huge success with speakers Carmel Daly, Executive Librarian, Helen Walsh, County Librarian, Mayor of Shannon Greg Duff and Shannon Airport's new chief executive Neil Pakie thanking Valerie for her wonderful contribution to Shannon library, Dúchas na Sionna and to the people of Shannon.
Summer Reading Challenge Certificate Presentation at Shannon Library
During the busy month of October, Seán Lemass Public Library hosted the presentation of certificates to children from Shannon, Sixmilebridge and Newmarket-on-Fergus who completed this year's Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge. During the summer months, children read 6 books and were rewarded with stickers and other incentives to help them along the way. Almost 300 children from the three libraries completed the challenge.
The presentation took place on Wednesday 16th October and Mayor of Shannon, Cllr. Greg Duff was on hand to present the certificates. Afterwards, the children and their parents, and not forgetting library staff, were entertained by the Captain Jack show. The evening was hugely enjoyable and it was thrill to see so many young readers being rewarded for their fantastic efforts.

This year’s Children’s Book Festival in Seán Lemass Public Library was another huge success. The first event on the 3rd October was a visit from Juliette Saumande, author of ‘Chop-Chop, Mad Cap!’ The group of children from 3rd class at St. Tola's National School loved hearing all about how Juliette comes up with ideas for her books and they had plenty of questions for her about writing and illustrating children's books. They particularly enjoyed drawing their own superhero identities. The second event, on Tuesday 15th October was a Bookmaking Workshop with Lisa Fingleton. 14 children attended from St. John's National School. This was an excellent and truly interactive experience for the children involved. Lisa was keen to hear about their favourite books and why they love particular authors. The children created their own books during the workshop and were then invited to read their stories out to the rest of the group.
On the 17th October, Shannon library hosted the Ice Age Adventure Show. 60 children from 4th class at St. Conaire's National School attended. The children were shown fossils and images which illustrated the Ice Age and as they were studying it in school, they had lots of questions and comments to make on everything discussed.
The last event for Children's Book Festival in Seán Lemass Public Library, Shannon was not one but two puppet shows from the Callback Theatre company. The shows called 'Dorothy DoLittle's Magical Adventure' took place on the morning of Friday 18th October. Two groups of children from junior classes in St. Conaire's and Cratloe National Schools were lucky enough to be in the audience for these events. The Dorothy DoLlittle show was all about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity and children particularly loved the characters of Ronnie-Run-A-Lot and Clarence Carrot and of course, Dorothy DoLlittle herself.

Halloween event in Tulla Library
Tulla Library was packed to capacity on a recent October evening for Halloween crafts and stories with local “witch” Edel McInerney. Edel’s special spooky event was much appreciated by Branch Librarian, Anne McNamara and forty children who attended with their parents. Fitting so many people in Tulla Branch Library at one time was surely in itself an example of Halloween magic at work!!

Major Publishers Collaborate on Morpurgo Month
Schools, libraries and bookshops are invited to focus weekly on the themes of Animals, War, Legends and Voyages, all common to Morpurgo’s writing and one of his books will be highlighted each day of the month via social media.

New eBooks
Man Booker prize winning novel The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton is now available to members of Clare County Library to download in eBook format. The book set during the 19th century New Zealand gold rush is at 832 pages, the longest work to win in the prize’s 45 year history.
Also available for loan as an eBook in addition to the printed version is Cathy Kelly’s latest novel The Honey Queen.
Skulduggery Pleasant fans can read the latest book in the series, Last Stand of Dead Men, on their eReader. Demon Dentist the new book by David Walliams – who has been hailed as the new Roald Dahl - is another novel available for younger readers to download.

Children’s Book Festival at Scariff Public Library
Puppeteers, artists and storytellers all paid a visit to Scariff Public Library this October to celebrate Children’s Book Festival in style. Niall de Burca got it off to a flying start with his rib-tickling stories after the Summer Reading Challenge certificate presentation. They made their own sock puppet with the Dog and String Theatre and got to put on a puppet show of their own. Alan Nolan impressed with his drawing skills and children had such fun designing their own comic strips and sketching one of the characters from his comics. Ger Siggins sure made an impression with his book Rugby Spirit, children are still coming in every day asking for copies. Wayne O’Connor’s passion for drawing and fantastically entertaining storytelling wowed the audience and he treated them to signed copies of his cartoons before he left! Looking forward to Children’s Book Festival 2014 already!
Scariff and Killaloe Libraries host Interactive Science Show for Children
Primary School Children from Scariff and Killaloe will celebrate Science Week in their local libraries on the 11th of November 2013. In a fast-moving show exploring the forces that are so important in allowing us to move, children will discover how propellers and rocket engines can push us forward and how friction and air resistance can hold us back. The hour long show takes place in Scariff at 10am and in Killaloe Library at 1.15pm
Children attending will be invited to travel to a world with little friction on an amazing hovercraft and they will witness the explosive power of rockets! And that’s not all; they will also enjoy finding out how to inflate marshmallows using the pressure of air!
This exciting science week show is brought to you courtesy of Learn Differently Ltd., Antrim and is facilitated by Terence Finnegan as part of Science Week Ireland which will see hundreds of events taking place nationwide from the 10th to the 17th of November 2013.
Speaking at the launch of Science Week 2013 well known science and maths educator Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin said, “I am delighted to be involved with Science Week and encourage everyone to get involved to see how science influences their lives! With over 550 events taking place nationwide there is something for everybody to take part in. Science can be found in everything we do and Science Week provides people with the opportunity to explore what’s happening behind the scenes of everyday life, which we sometimes don’t think about!” Clare County Library’s science week event is free to children in primary schools in the Scariff and Killaloe area.

He also played the simple-system flute and was a collector of traditional music and folklore. This track is mainly a narrative by Micho himself in his own unique style. It begins with some music on the tin whistle. That is followed by an account of of his musical rambling and roving to the USA, to England and to Germany. New History of Corofin Parish
A new history of the Parish of Corofin was launched recently. The Parish of Corofin: A Historical Profile was written and published by well-known historian, Michael Mac Mahon. The modern Catholic Parish of Corofin provides the geographical basis for this excellent history. The parish includes the medieval parishes of Rathblathmac (Rath) and Killinaboy, whose respective patron saints – St Blathmac and St Iníon Bhaoith – are believed to have brought Christianity to the area. Michael’s history begins before that era with the pre-human landscape and the early settlers, examined through the extensive archaeological remains found in the area. Michael details the evolution of the Christian church from its establishment, through the monastic system to the 12th reform and the Reformation. The parish was the home of the two most powerful branches of the O’Brien family, the Barons of Inchiquin and the O’Briens of Leamaneh and Dromoland. The family’s residences and activities are examined as well as their impact on the region. There are also chapters on matters like farming and the oppression and revival of the Catholic Church. A section on the surprisingly varied educational establishments of the 19th century is fascinating. Corofin was the birthplace of the Terry Alts and the chapter on agrarian unrest is excellent, as is the following one on the Famine. The book brings us up the end of the 20th century, and a chapter on the customs, lore and legends of the parish concludes this valuable publication and displays the extent of the author’s interest and knowledge.
Michael Mac Mahon is a past vice-president and an honorary life member of the Clare Archaeological & Historical Society. He holds an MA in History & Local Studies from the University of Limerick and is a former member of the Heritage Council. He has written extensively on the history, folklore, literature and placenames of County Clare and has contributed many articles to ‘The Other Clare’ magazine over the years. Alice Munro – 2013 Nobel Prize Winner
Short story writer Alice Munro has been awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature. The Nobel Committee described the 82 year old Canadian as the “master of the contemporary short story" and noted that some critics considered her a Canadian Chekhov. Her stories often focus on the lives of ordinary men and women in small-town Ontario, where she has spent most of her life, and explore human relationships through ordinary everyday events. In 2009, she was awarded the Man Booker International Prize for her entire body of work. Munro announced earlier this year that her latest book, Dear Life, a collection of partly autobiographical stories published in 2012, would be her last.

Dolmen de Poulnabrone
"El dolmen de Poulnabrone (en irlandés Poll na mBrón, "agujero de penas") es un antiguo enterramiento que se encuentra en el Burren, en el condado de Clare (Irlanda), del periodo neolítico, probablemente entre el 4200 a. C. y el 2900 a. C. Consta de una piedra lisa de tres metros de largo que descansa sobre otras dos dispuestas a modo de puerta, y éstas a su vez sobre un túmulo, que ofrece estabilidad al monumento, y que en su origen debía de ser más alto de lo que es en la actualidad. En 1985, se descubrió una grieta en una de las piedras que sirven de soporte. Por ello, hubo que desmantelar el dolmen y reemplazar la piedra soporte. Durante esta operación, se aprovechó para realizar excavaciones, por las que se descubrieron los restos de al menos 33 personas enterradas bajo el monumento. Entre los objetos personales enterrados con los esqueletos se encuentran un hacha de piedra, un colgante de hueso, cristales de cuarzo, armas y cerámica. Dada su situación predominante sobre el paisaje del Burren que lo rodea, este monumento debía de ser el centro de ceremonias y rituales durante la Edad de Bronce, y hasta bien entrado el periodo celta." Polish Festival continues at Clare Museum
The Polish Festival continues at Clare Museum with two public talks this week.
On Thursday, 3rd October at 1pm there will be a lunchtime lecture on the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, given by Jakub Kacprzak, a grandson of an insurgent.
A morning talk on Multi-culturalism in Poland will held on Saturday, 5th October at 11 am. This will be given by Marcin and Marina Piotrowski, members of the Folkowisko association. In the afternoon the Polish film series will continue with the movie ‘A short film about killing’ which has an 18 certificate.

"The Famous Faha Sports by Seán Ó Sé with The Turloughmore Ceilí Band. Fahanlunaghta Mór and Fahanlunaghta Beag lie to the east between Miltown Malbay and Lahinch, and were the scene of a popular sports day which was discontinued during the Second World War. The great concertina player Kitty Hayes, was originally Kitty Smith from Fahanlunaghta. Kitty passed away in May 2008, leaving behind a rich legacy of music. Tim Dennehy recorded a version of this song on his album 'A Thimbleful of Song'. The authorship is attributed to Miko Guthrie with extra verses added by Breandán Higgins of Lahinch." The Festival of Poland at Clare Museum continues
The Festival of Poland at Clare Museum continues this week. On 26th September there will be a lunchtime lecture on the Polish O’Deas who can trace their origins to County Clare. The talk will be given by Mietek Odya who is an active member of the Dysert O’Dea Clan Association. The talk will start at 1pm at Clare Museum.
On Saturday 28th September, Jakub Kacprzak an Irish based Polish archaeologist and one of the organisers of the festival, will give a morning lecture at the museum comparing the megalithic archaeology of Ireland and Poland. It will begin at 11am.
In the afternoon of Saturday 28th September Clare Museum will be showing the Roman Polanski film ‘The Pianist’. This film will begin at 2.30pm sharp and should finish just before the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final replay begins on television at 5pm.

Have you always thought that you have a novel in you? Well now is your chance to get a lucrative publishing deal. The Richard and Judy Bookclub have launched a competition to find a new bestselling writer. Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have become powerful figures in the publishing world with critics coining the phrase ‘the Richard & Judy effect’ to describe the effect that endorsement by them has on sales of a novel, often turning debut writers into millionaires.
The winner, who must be a first-time author, will win a £50,000 publishing deal with Quercus and receive free advice from literary agency Furniss Lawton, as well as a year's worth of PR.
Search for a Bestseller is open to unpublished writers, who must submit between 10,000 and 12,000 words, along with a synopsis of the rest of the book. There are no restrictions on genre, but the novel should be aimed at adults. Self-published writers are not eligible. Children’s Book Festival 2013 - Flying the Flag for Children’s Books
Our festival gets a head start this year with the return to Glór Theatre, Ennis, of one of the world’s best-selling children’s and teenage authors, Darren Shan, on the 26th of September. This internationally best-selling author is back with us again, to meet with his thousands of fans in County Clare. Zom-B is his new epic series, launched in September 2012 with a new book publishing every 3 months! His latest release Zom-B Baby is “a big, sprawling, vicious tale... a grisly piece of escapism, and a barbed look at the world in which we live,” according to the author himself. The Ennis Book Shop will join with the library to promote the event selling copies of Darren’s latest book and others in the series on the day.
The second of the library’s book festival events taking place in Glór, this time on the 1st of October, is a storytelling extravaganza by the master of tales Niall de Burca. Renowned for shows full of energy, wit and superb timing, Niall has performed in places as diverse as Tehran and the European Parliament in Brussels. Raised in the West, he emigrated at a young age and lived for many years in New Zealand where he married into a large Maori family. Now living in Dublin, Niall travels worldwide, inspiring people of all ages with his traditional and original tales. To quote the Vienna Review of Books: “His ability to evoke a wide range of emotions from his rapt audience enables him to bewitch people with his stories”. There has been unprecedented interest in these events and both are now fully booked.
Other visiting authors to libraries all over the county include Sheena Wilkinson winner of not one but two prestigious Children’s Book of the Year Awards and Anna Carey whose first book, The Real Rebecca, published in 2011won the Senior Children’s Book Prize at the Irish Book Awards that year.
Alan Nolan is back with his excellent writing and drawing sessions infused with his obvious enthusiasm and enjoyment in what he does best; making books for children. Bestselling author, Michael Smith whose biography for younger readers – Tom Crean – Iceman - led to the story being incorporated into the schools’ national curriculum will be visiting Kilrush and Kilkee libraries. Author Juliette Saumande is Reviews Editor with Inis, The Children’s Books Ireland Magazine. She has written over twenty picture books (published in France) and one novel in English for younger readers (called Chop-Chop, Mad Cap!) on which she will base four action-packed workshops when she visits libraries in Clare. Sports Journalist Ger Siggins will introduce young readers to his love of rugby through his book Rugby Spirit published last year by O’Brien Press.
Anna Carey is also a journalist who has written for the Irish Times, Irish Independent and many other publications. Her first book, The Real Rebecca, was published in 2011, and won the Senior Children’s Book prize at the Irish Book Awards. To the delight of many readers, Rebecca returned in the sequel Rebecca’s Rules in 2012. Rebecca Rocks is book number 3 in the series. “The Drip” is an entertaining and educational account of the water cycle told by a little drip who begins his life dangling from a tap. It is also Gordon Green’s second delightful picture book for children. It will be presented to young audiences in libraries through an exciting and fun workshop by the author.
And these are just the authors visiting our county this October. In addition we invite you to join in our art and craft workshops, space exploration show, an ice-age exploration and puppet making workshops. Contact your local library for details of what’s on in your area. Events are planned specifically for school audiences and teachers are advised to book classes in early to avoid disappointment.
